English National Opera
Corinne Winters: Violetta
ENO presents the first major Verdi production to be staged in the UK in the composer’s bicentenary in a co-production with Graz Opera House. Celebrated German opera director and former Principal Director of Leipzig Oper, Peter Konwitschny makes his long-awaited UK debut with his staging of Verdi’s classic. Konwitschny’s modern and uncluttered take on Verdi’s perennial tale of the tart-with-a heart, parts the curtains on the opera’s romantic nexus of love and death to expose society’s enduring double standards when it comes to sex and money.
Exciting young American soprano Corinne Winters makes her European debut as Violetta Valéry, the terminally sick prostitute coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover’s public reputation and his sister’s marriage prospects. Rising young British lyric tenor Ben Johnson (‘a great success’ – Classical Source – as Nemorino in 2011’s Elixir of Love ) sings the ineffectual Alfredo, with internationally acclaimed baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore (a ‘loathsomely mellifluous’ – The Independent – Scarpia in Tosca in 2010 and 2011) as his manipulative father. Conductor Michael Hofstetter makes his ENO debut.
