The French composer Philippe Fénelon and the English librettist Ian Burton unite their efforts to give to the people of the Geneva a “philosophical recreation” in an act, worthy of the celebrations of the tricentenaire of the birth of John Jacques Rousseau, ordered by the City of Geneva and the Grand Théâtre de Genève. A contemporary score, filled with musical ideas and delicious quotations, the opera allows the public to look back over the life and the work of one of the bigger spirits of the Lights. JJR (Citizen of Geneva) is a contemporary opera, of course, but faithful to the spirit of John Jacques where nothing must force the natural inclinations and all must stimulate curiosity and pleasure.
