Gaston Rivero: Cloriviere

MARIE VICTOIRE is Ottorino Respighi´s fourth opera. It was conceived in 1912/13. We still do not know today why this opera was not premiered at the beginning of 1915 at Teatro Costanzi in Rome. The main reason could certainly be the universal political situation; during the first year of World War I the Kingdom of Italy remained neutral. This position however led to vehement conflicts between warmongers and neutral parties in the political arenas and on the streets. In the midst of this nationwide commotion, the explicit presentation of the French Revolution with ist tumultuous mass scenes, as well as a historic assassination attempt aimed at Napoleon, that great, strong military leader, could have tempted the audience to loudly proclaim their opinions for and against the War. To put it plainly, Teatro Costanzi canceled the premiere in order to prevent battle scenes in the auditorium, along with a political scandal. It was only 89 years later, in the Spring of 2004, that MARIE VICTOIRE awoke on the opera stage.  Tickets & Information.
