Javier Abreu: Vallet/Tribune II
Claudio Monteverdi’s final work, ‘L’incoronazione di Poppea’, was first performed at the Teatro dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (Grimani Theatre) in Venice, at the 1642 carnival. It was one of the first works to be performed outside aristocratic lounges, for an audience that paid for their tickets. It was perhaps for this reason, that Monteverdi made ‘L’incoronazione’ a mixture of genres to suit all tastes, ranging from grotesque comedy to sublime lyricism. Tickets & Information.
